The Ugly Duckling
Told by Marie Passariello

Once upon a time a long time ago a farmer had a pond .. it was a lovely pond with lots of reeds and fishes .. all the animals in the farmyard would gather at the pond to drink and chatter.. and the ducks would swim on the pond .. diving and circling .. splashing and quacking .... Quack Quack!

...one of the ducks was a special duck , she was a mommy duck .. what do you think her name was ?

she was called Mommy Duck .. mommy duck was special because she had a nest and in that nest were some eggs four eggs .... like this one .. two ..three .. four .. and they were lovely eggs .. green and speckled all excepting one .. one egg .. was big and creamy and Mommy Duck was very proud of her big egg ..

Every day Mommy Duck would turn her eggs and then she would shuffle onto the nest and sit there very proudly .. fluffing her feathers ..

Then one day .. one of the eggs began to crackle .. and a tiny hole appeared and then a tiny beak .. and then a tiny head and soon the egg split in two and there was a tiny little duck all yellow and fluffy and Mommy Duck was very happy .. what do you think she called her tiny new baby ?

She called him baby ducky .. and he was smart little duck and not long after another egg started to hatch and then a third egg .. all of the eggs hatched .. all excepting the special egg .. the special big egg didn't hatch yet .. but Mommy Duck was a good mommy and she sat patiently on her egg and cuddled her three babies about her waiting for her last egg to hatch ..

The next day the big egg started to crackle and soon a tiny beak appeared and then a head and then a little body .. but it wasn't a little fluffy yellow baby like the other three duckies .. this baby was grey and stubbly and it's neck was too long and it's feet were too big and .. it was rather a sketch to be truthful.. but Mommy Duck didn't care she loved her new baby just like the other three ..

Later that day Mommy Duck gathered her babies about her,, and now my little sweetie .. she told them, I am going to teach you to swim .. it was a very strange looking ducky ..not at all like the duckies you have in your bath ..
but all the same .. Mommy Duck was proud of her babies and so it was that she led them down to the pond .. Mommy Duck waddled ahead and behind her in a neat little line were her babies .. one , two , three .. and four.. .. Quack Quack said mommy duck .. peep peep went the babies all excepting number four and he was rather quiet ..
when they arrived at the pond Mommy Duck ushered her babies towards the other animals .. look look she said .. see my new family .. these are my new babies aren't they sweet ?.. Yes agreed the other animals all excepting that one .. and they all pointed at number four .. he's ugly .. look at him .. what a sketch .. he's not at all sweet .. his feather are all stubby and brown why would you want such an ugly duckling .. he can't stay here .. send him away .. he's UGLY !! shoo .. run away .. get out of here .. they hissed and mooed and grunted and barked .. leave here .. Go .. Go.. get out of town!

Poor little ducky .. he hung his head in shame and sadly he slipped away .. he had no where to go and so he found a lonely clump of weeds and there he hid himself away .. he was scared and lonely .. and so very very sad .. wasn't that so mean of the other animals ?
Summer turned to autumn .. and autumn turned to winter and the ground was frozen and the snow fell and still the little duckling hid himself away .. afraid to show his face .. afraid of what others might say .. all through that winter in his lonely clump of weed.. poor baby ..
but then one day .the little ducky looked out of his weeds and there was anew comer to the pond a big white bird .. magnificent and royal and regal..
I don't know what happened to Mommy Duck .. i bet she was sad that the other animals made her baby leave ..it was a swan and soon there was another swan and a whole flock of swans and the little duckling looked out of his weeds in awe .. and they spotted the little ducking and called to him .. you're a very fine swan they told him ..
"Me .. a swan .. ? " said the little duckling .. " no you are teasing me I'm not a swan .. I'm an ugly duckling with feathers all stubby and brown and all the other animals told me so "
yes your a swan .. take a look at yourself in the pond .. look look .. you are a swan .. and so nervously and with his little heart pattering so hard he looked at his reflection in the water and he looked and he looked and he looked again and then he said .. "I am a swan .. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
No longer and Ugly duckling with feathers all stubby and brown.. no longer a quack .. not a waddle or a quack .. but a glide and a whistle and a snowy white back ..
.. the ugly ducking left his lonely clump of weeds and he held his head noble and high .. "no longer an Ugly duckling .. NOT I"

FUNNY DEAR ABBY COLUMN

This first one is circa February 18, 1964 (Crazy how men thought back then!)

DEAR ABBY: If you read the papers as well as write for them, you saw the article about the judge who gave a husband permission to spank his wife when she needed it. All I can say is, “It’s about time.” I was beginning to think the women were taking over the country. If more men turned their wives over their knees and showed them who was boss, society would be in better shape. Spanking would be legalized everywhere. –ONE MAN’S OPNION

DEAR MAN: There are at least two things wrong with legalizing wife-spanking: (1) When does a spanking end and a beating begin? (2) Who is the final authority on when a wife “needs” a spanking? When she repeatedly puts starch in his collars? Or pastes his mother in the face with a coconut cake? Sorry, but spankings are for children.

DEAR ABBY: My wife sleeps in the raw. Then she showers, brushes her teeth and fixes our breakfast — still in the buff. We're newlyweds and there are just the two of us, so I suppose there's really nothing wrong with it. What do you think? —Ed

DEAR ED: It's O.K. with me. But tell her to put on an apron when she's frying bacon.

Masoma County EATS

RECIPES OF THE WEEK

Each week, the Masoma Daily News will print a fabulous recipe for all of its residents to try out in RL if they so choose. Enjoy this week's yummy treat!

Twenty Minute Chicken Recipe

3 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
1/2 large onion, chopped
2 (10 ounce) packages sliced fresh button mushrooms
1/4 cup olive oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 clove garlic, chopped (optional)
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Wash chicken breasts, pat dry with paper towels, and cut each breast in half. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear chicken briefly, turning until no longer pink, about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, in another large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat. Stir in mushrooms, onions, and garlic, if using; cook until they are nice and soft, about 5 minutes.

Pour contents of both skillets into a baking dish, sprinkle cheese over the top, and bake about 5 minutes.

Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

1 1/2 cups bananas, mashed, ripe
2 teaspoons lemon juice
3 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter, softened
2 1/8 cups sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Frosting
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups icing sugar
Garnish
chopped walnuts
Directions:

Directions:

Preheat oven to 275°.
Grease and flour a 9 x 13 pan. In a small bowl, mix mashed banana with the lemon juice; set aside. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, cream 3/4 cup butter and 2 1/8 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in 2 tsp vanilla.

Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Stir in banana mixture. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake in preheated oven for one hour or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Remove from oven and place directly into the freezer for 45 minutes. This will make the cake very moist.

For the frosting, cream the butter and cream cheese until smooth. Beat in 1 teaspoon vanilla. Add icing sugar and beat on low speed until combined, then on high speed until frosting is smooth. Spread on cooled cake.

Sprinkle chopped walnuts over top of the frosting, if desired.
